Nancy
|
Nancy is a grade 12 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. She has been playing violin since her elementary years. With a strong passion for music, she has participated in various music-related events such as orchestras, performances, and tutoring violin. By joining VYMA, she hopes to spread her love and knowledge for violin to younger students, and for them to feel a sense of accomplishment like she does when playing a musical piece. Besides playing the violin, she also enjoys playing the piano, drawing, and singing in her own time

Sunny |
Sunny is a grade 12 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. He begun playing violin a month before he enrolled into grade 8. He is currently a member of the Sir Winston Churchill Senior Orchestra and has other ensemble experience from the Sir Winston Churchill Intermediate Orchestra, as well as private lessons outside of school. Sunny has a strong passion and love towards music and violin playing, and is determined to improve his musical abilities everyday. He thinks that spreading musical education is important, and by joining the VYMA he hopes to spread and teach musical education to young musicians. Outside of school he competes in badminton competitively, and also likes to listen to music and watch K-Dramas.

Abigail |
Abigail is currently a grade 11 student in Sir Winston Churchill Secondary’s International Baccalaureate Program. She has been playing violin for seven years and has played in Churchill’s Intermediate Strings and Senior Strings ensemble. She has played for Churchill’s graduation twice and has also played at the Chan Centre. Abigail has experience playing piano, and has completed RCM level 6 piano and level 8 theory. She hopes to improve her music and leadership skills with the VYMA and her goal is to finish RCM level 8 violin next year. Aside from music, Abigail also is a competitive figure skater and has been skating for nine years. She enjoys listening to K-pop music, reading, watching Netflix, and hanging out with her friends.

Anna |
Anna is a Grade 11 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. It is her second year in Vancouver youth music association. Anna is currently in the Senior Strings Orchestra, she have participated in performing for graduations and at Chan Centre for “VSB’s inaugural celebrations of performing arts festival”. She started playing the violin during grade 4, in the Strings Program at Dr. Annie B. Jamieson Elementary. She learned and had memorable times during her elementary years in the program. In VYMA, she hopes that she can share her experience and show how music can make remarkable memories. Besides playing the violin, she also enjoys hanging out with her friends, playing the piano, and volunteering with kids at her Japanese School that she used to attend.

Chrissy |
Chrissy is a grade 11 student currently attending at Sir Winston Churchill secondary school. She started playing violin since grade 7 in the strings program at Dr. Annie B. Jamieson elementary school. She participated in the Churchill intermediate strings orchestra in the pass two years. She is recently preparing for The Royal Conservatory of Music level 6 violin exam and has already completed the level 8 theory exam. By joining VYMA, she is looking forward to support children through their way of learning more about violin playing and developing her leadership skills along the way. Other hobbies she has besides playing violin is English horseback riding, traveling, and listening to music.

Ethan

Ethan is a grade 11 French immersion IB student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. He has been playing the violin since he was 6. He is a passionate musician, playing in VYSO's Senior Orchestra and having completed The Royal Conservatory of Music level 10 violin exam. He is grateful for learning these skills and looks forward to giving back to the community through the VYMA program. Besides music, Ethan does robotics, and tutors. He enjoys exercising and listening to a wide range of music genres.
Hailey is a Grade 11 French Immersion student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. She started playing piano at the age of five, and picked up the violin in Grade 6. Her accomplishments for piano include completing her RCM Level 10 Piano, Harmony & Counterpoint, and History exams. In addition, she performed in various music festivals and often plays the piano accompaniment for her twin brother, Nathan, at cello recitals. Aside from being a part of her school’s string orchestra and taking lessons outside of school, she is a part of a violin ensemble, the West Coast Fiddleheads, where she gets the opportunity to perform at senior homes and community events. While Hailey enjoys playing music, she is also passionate about its history, different styles, and composers. She also loves reading, watching sci-fi and action shows, and solving puzzles.

Hannah |
Hannah is a grade 11 French immersion IB student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. She played the cello with Churchill’s strings program for the past 3 years. She is a dedicated musician who is always looking to improve her playing, including taking private lessons outside of school. She has a solid music background having completed The Royal Conservatory of Music level 8 piano and theory as well as the RCM level 5 cello exam. She appreciates her musical experiences and looks forward to sharing her joy for music with everyone at the VYMA program. Besides music, Hannah is a dancer who enjoys ballet and tap. She also loves cooking and listening to music.

Henry |
Henry is currently a grade 11 student at VYMA. He was first introduced to violin by James Colpitts, an instructor at Annie B. Jamison elementary school in grade 4, which began his musical venture. Over the next 7 years, Henry has passed the level 10 of music exams at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and since performed with the official Vancouver Youth Symphany Orchestra (VYSO), volunteered at musical organizations /events outside of school, such as non-profit performances in elderly care homes, and private paid performances for events. Henry enjoys teaching and hopes that students also enjoy and cooperate with the instructors and their peers.

Nathan |
Nathan is a grade 10 student in the French Immersion Prelude program. He started playing the piano at the age of 5 and has completed the RCM Level 10 Piano, Harmony, and History. Over the course of his piano journey, he participated at numerous festivals and won various awards. While in quarantine, he has decided to pick up his second instrument, the cello to broaden his musical horizons. He now takes weekly lessons with his private teacher. Nathan loves to practice and work on his shifting and vibrato when playing the cello. When taking a break from music, you can expect Nathan to be playing with his RC cars, drones, or playing board games (or eating instant noodles and Korean fried chicken)! His favorite composer is George Gershwin.

Ruby |
Ruby is currently a grade 11 student part of the International Baccalaureate program at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. She has been playing piano since she was 5 years old, and violin since grade 5. Additionally, she has achieved level 9 piano and level 10 music theory. She was a keen player of Churchill’s Senior Strings Orchestra for 2 years, playing at the Chan Center and at high school graduation twice. Having experienced the VYMA as both a student and mentor, she hopes to share her experiences and knowledge acquired as a student from being with them for the past 4 years with younger, blooming individuals. She strives to improve both her playing and ability to work with others. Along with violin, she teaches piano as a side hustle. Aside from music, Ruby is also a competitive dancer who takes part in various other extracurriculars. She enjoys drawing, listening to music, and dancing.

Alice |
Alice Zhou, a grade 11 student of Sir Winston Churchill, has been playing the piano since age 5. She has performed in various different concert halls including Wuhan Qintai concert hall and Carnegie hall in New York. She has also won a few awards, including first prizes in the GOCAA international Piano Competition, the 2022 Bulldog Music Festival, the 2023 Steinway competition, and Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals. Prior to the pandemic, Alice would perform at senior homes every month to bring joy to the community. She is currently the piano accompanist for VYMA and her school’s senior orchestra. Apart from piano playing, Alice enjoys playing the violin and horseback riding, both of which she started recently.

Aurora Xia is currently an IB Year 1 student at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary. She is very excited to be part of VYMA’s backend team this year because she’s passionate about networking as well as music. She has been playing the piano for just over a decade, and, having completed all RCM theory courses and piano level 10 two years ago, is currently (casually) working towards her ARCT diploma. Outside of her musical pursuits, Aurora enjoys reading, writing, and baking. She wishes the VYMA team and students the best in their musical endeavors this year. |

Hannah is a music-loving person who enjoys singing, playing the piano and guitar, and listening to all sorts of tunes. Hannah is kind and nice, and she believes that music has the power to bring joy to people's lives. Whether she is strumming the strings of the guitar, playing on a piano, or singing my heart out, I find happiness in the world of melodies. She is always happy to share her passion for music with others and spread positivity through the language of music. |
